Tablet vs. Smartphone

The shift to mobile is on. Consumers are spending more and more time with mobile as growth slows for time online with desktop and laptop a report for eMarketer shows. But what does mobile mean?

The common assumption is that mobile both refers to smartphones and tablets and both devices are similar to the other. Of course, there are similarities between the devices as both are app and web connected, personally customized, portable and touchscreen enabled.

But the similarities end here and companies would be best served by taking advantage of the unique features and differences each device offers. While thinking mobile, most companies think smartphone first. However, the reality is that many brands (like Toyota) could benefit from thinking tablet first.

Tablets drive mobile sales

When discussing tablet vs. smartphones an interesting fact is, that tablets will drive 65% of mobile commerce sales in 2013, even though smartphones still make up the majority of connected devices in the U.S., according to another eMarketer report released on April 24, 2013.

The report further predicts that in 2017, tablets’ share of US retail mcommerce sales will rise to 71.5% vs. 27% for smartphone.

Different devices for different situations

Marketers that want to embrace mobile devices in their marketing efforts need to understand that consumers use different devices in different situations. The majority of tablet usage is spent on more emotional activities such as shopping, gaming and entertainment while smartphone usage tends to center around more functional daily activities such as social, photos, weather and maps. Thereby, the tablet provides a deeper engagement than the smartphone which is used more frequently but for shorter periods of time according to Flurry.

In the same study, Flurry proves that tablets have a greater spike of usage during the prime-time television window, whereas smartphone usage is more evenly distributed throughout the day. This indicates that tablets are more often used as the second screen alongside television in the evening or even as a substitute for television.

Both tablets and smartphones have great potential for creating value for brands but simply said; smartphones are used differently and serve different purposes than tablets. Therefore, marketers must know their target group when deciding which platform to go for.

New Art Director at Springfeed

The Movia Game in new Christmas Version

Movia is the biggest transport company in Denmark with 570 bus lines, 8 local railroad lines and over 213 mio. passengers every year.

Movia Play is a mobile website, in which you are able to play "Where is the bus?" while you wait for your bus. The website also enables you to

get information through text messages about arrival time for a given bus stop, subscribe to Movias Mobile Portal or get informed if your primary bus line is delayed or the schedule changed.

Movia has now launched the Movia Play game in a new Christmas version, so you can get into that Christmas spirit while waiting on the bus.

You find the game at www.moviaspil.dk and you need to access the game from a mobile device.

Award winning App

The e-takeaway app has in recent month experienced a high level of success as a result of two national awards.

Thursday 15th of November Mobile Awards (Mobile Awards Denmark 2012) announced that e-takeaway won App of the Year 2012 in the Danish National Museum, and November the 18th it won the Best of Beep award which is a yearly event in the 'Bella Center'.

The app that has been developed by Springfeed is the first food ordering app in Denmark, and the objective of the app was the users “look and feel” experience by searching and ordering food on the smartphone. Furthermore, the app adds value to the users as it allows users to order your favorite menus with just a few clicks, whether you are on the bus or just sitting in the couch. The e-takeaway app is a perfect example of an app that makes sense throughout the value it creates for the users. A point also outlined by the judging panel at the Mobile Awards 2012:

“A great app doesn’t need to have a big number of functions; it just needs a goal. A goal and a concept that creates value for us consumers and make it easier to use. And it is only an advantage that the app is so well constructed.”

Springfeed has been able to develop an app that creates great value for e-takeaway.dk through the value it delivers to the consumers and users of the app. A well-defined process helped Springfeed and e-takeaway to develop a clean user-friendly app which is the perfect example on an app that creates value for a company.

Order food with the new e-takeaway App

Danish e-takeaway is a web based service with takeaway food, founded in 2002. The e-takeaway app gives an overview of takeaway places near you based on GPS location, or according to search criterias such as zip code, name or type of food. It is easy to follow the status of an order, from the restaurant has received the order until it is delivered. A favourite feature in the e-takeaway app, gathers what is ordered the most and can be connected with an e-takeaway profile.

New offices

Springfeed to teach Android @MicroWorld

MicroWorld has since 1996 delivered dedicated and professional it-training to both individuals and companies. "DIGITALT!" - an iPad app for the Copenhagen Main Library

The app gives visitors at the library an opportunity to search, watch and read about the different publications in several categories such as books, movies, music, newspapers and encyclopedia.

"DIGITALT!" is an offline solution which is only available on iPads at the library, and is not on App Store.

"Jørgens Vinder App" for Android and iPhone

“Jørgens Vinder App” is the mobile part of Jørgen's Winner Academy where Jørgen will coach the Danes how to become a real winner.

“Vinder App” is a game where the user has to collect trophies, either by scanning QR codes on KiMs crisps or collecting GPS-trophies located all over Denmark. When reaching 15 trophies the user can subscribe for a competition for a full truck of crisps.

Besides apps for Android and iOS, a Facebook app is also included, where the users can follow friends and share whenever they received a new trophy or price.

Springfeed has developed “Jørgens Vinder App” for Android, iPhone and Facebook for Wibroe, Duckert & Partners.

'Find bolig med Estate' is a broker-app that keeps you informed with the housing market in your vicinity. You can view and search all types of properties, view detailed information on these, calculate loan interest and see the price trend of the local area. To find the nearest 'Estate' broker is also made extra easy and it is also straightforward to get an overview of 'open house' events in an area. The app is updated daily with new housing topics from multiple broker chains.

Nordania for iPhone

The Nordania iPhone app provides helpful information for drivers in case of emergency. Such as finding a gas station or workshop near your location. The Nordania app also helps you remember where your car is parked, and when your parking ticket expires. By shaking your mobile Nordania's latest offer will appear.

If you have an agreement at Nordania you can log in and check out details about your car and the leasing agreement. The app is made for both private and business agreements. The Nordania app is not only for Nordania’s customers, but can be used be everyone.

QR codes - best practices

What is a QR code?

QR or Quick Response codes are a kind of 2 dimensional bar code, similar to those we know from everyday use, however they can contain a lot more information than traditional bar codes. They were invented in Japan in 1994 by Denso-Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, and were originally used to keep track of automobile parts. At the moment, we see QR codes everywhere - on posters, in magazines, newspapers, business cards and goods in the supermarket. The use of QR codes has exploded over the past few years. 6.2 % of all U.S. mobile users scanned a QR code in June this year only. (Source: Comscore)

There are many alternatives to QR codes, but since QR code is an ISO standard and the patent behind it is not exercised, it's easy and free to write QR code scanners and generators, and thereby QR Code won more widely than other formats. As mentioned, you see QR codes everywhere and they are typically used to activate the user through the mobile phone. Typical examples of the use of QR codes in marketing campaigns:

At the grocery products to make consumers aware of a related fanpage on Facebook and thus start a viral effect
In newspapers, magazines and posters to get the recipient to download the app, or use the mobile website which is linked to a campaign
In advertising or direct mail campaigns to people by scanning the code directly, call up or simply send an SMS

It's easy to get started using QR codes. If you go to http://qrcode.springfeed.com you can make your own code that can be used in printed material in seconds. But just as easy as it is to get started, just as hard can it be to do it right. There are some things you should be aware of, which we will list here.

Size matters

Not all cameras in mobile phones are of high quality, has auto zoom or ability to focus up close. Therefore it is important that QR code has a minimum size of about 4x4 cm, but in general the bigger the better. This is especially important if the code is printed on high glossy paper which is usually used in magazines.

Keep your tags simple

By keeping the URL as short as possible, the QR code is also simpler and easier to scan. If possible use a URL shortener service such as http://bit.ly or a landing page with a short URL.

One code per service

Unfortunately you quite often see printed material with multiple QR codes, one for each supported mobile platform. Long URLs which are pointing directly at the app store. QR codes are not particularly pretty, so for aesthetic reasons it makes sense to limit it to one code per service. Moreover, the user may have trouble to scan the correct code if several codes are too close to each other.

Landing page

A landing page is a dedicated mobile optimized web page that should be linked to the QR code for the following reasons:

If a service is dependent on the mobile platform, for example an app, a landing page sends the user automatically to the respective app store, without the need for multiple QR codes.
It is possible to change content even after the QR code is printed.
We can integrate statistical modules as needed.
If a visiting user's mobile platform is not yet supported by a service, you can via a landing page tell the user so and collect his or her user information. This makes it possible to contact the user at a later date when his platform is supported. Many users will consider this as good service.

Statistics

One of the benefits of QR codes is that it enables collection of statistics and it is therefore possible to measure the effect of printed advertising. We can collect information about visitors' phone models and thereby decide which phones to focus upon in the future. Furthermore, we can say something about which code has been scanned, in case it is unique.

Where the code is used is important

QR codes are not effective everywhere. QR codes are dependent on the mobile phone's ability to function as a scanner via their camera and using the Internet connection. This means that poor light conditions, bad Internet connection and simply having the opportunity to use the mobile phone all influences the consumers desire and ability to scan codes. This means that in cinemas where people have turned off the phone, commercials on airplanes or in underground metro stations where the connection is not always good, are not necessarily the obvious places to use QR codes.

Help people and give them an alternative

Because QR codes are still relatively new to users, they need guidance and a call to action. Tell the users that they need to scan the code with their mobile phone, and give a link to the scanning software if they do not already have one installed. For example, "Download scanner from http://bit.ly/getqrreader" If the user does not want to install or use the scanner, then give them an alternative, e.g. a link to the landing page which is used in the QR code.

Quiet Zone

Around the QR code there should be a so called quiet zone in the shape of an edge without content, for the scanner to easier recognize the actual code. Designers often eliminate this to customize the code and align it to the surroundings, but this may be a problem for the scanner.

Not everything is black and white

A QR code in its classic black and white form is not exactly pleasing for the eye. If a designer spent hours to obtain a graphic expression of a campaign, the introduction of a QR code can often break and destroy the intended effect. QR codes do not have to be black on a white background. The colors can be easily interchanged and other colors can be used. Company logos can even be incorporated in the QR code, and thus have a unique look. Designers have more freedom than it is often assumed when working with QR.

Test the code

Do not forget to test the code with different QR code scanners. Perhaps the code does not point at the correct landing page, maybe there is an error in it. It may be too small, or the colours used are not contrasting enough to recognize the code.

Rise of M-commerce

A new report from DIBS (download it in Danish here) shows that e-commerce via mobile devices (m-commerce) is in growth, and especially in the Northern Countries with Denmark, Sweden and Poland in the lead amongst the 9 European countries in the report.

What do users purchase?

According to the report, the products which the m-commerce users prefer to purchase include travels, finance-, insurance- and telecommunication services. In general e-commerce users have great confidence in shopping online. They strongly believe in the travel business as an industry which will become more attractive among e-commerce users.

Who are the users?

E-commerce is preferred by the majority because it helps them save time and money. The report shows that among all people purchasing online, 16% of them do so via their mobile phone. Furthermore it reveals that 25% of people between 15-44 years have shopped via the mobile phone. This indicates a great unexplored potential market for companies with audiences in this wide range of age.

One of the more interesting m-commerce examples is eBay in the UK, who revealed that sales via mobile phones now account for more than 10% of all purchases on eBay UK. A great amount of e-shops want to follow eBay’s example. The DIBS’ report shows that 22% of all e-shops are planning on launching a mobile solution.

To sum up, we are likely to see more m-commerce solutions on the way, and a significant and rising number of users willing to use them making it mainstream. The question is perhaps no longer if m-commerce will take on, but who will survive not doing it.

New free QR code generator service

Springfeed has just released a free QR code generator which you can access from

A QR code is a two-dimensionel barcode enabling marketeers to engage users via their smartphones. The QR code contains information or a link which is revealed on the smartphone upon being scanned.

A new statistics from ComScore shows that 14 millions Americans scanned a QR code within only one month, proving this is gaining popularity fast.

The release of eBillet

Springfeed has developed eBillet - a mobile website, using HTML5.

eBillet is your local cinema guide, which gives you an overview of current movies. With eBillet you can buy tickets or book reservations via your mobile or tablet. Watch trailers and information about new releases and the release dates of future movies. Furthermore, you can search for a movie according to your preferences, such as title, date or time.

Moodagent pre-embedded on Nokia phones

Springfeed has assisted Syntonetic in the development of Moodagent for Nokia S40 and BlackBerry.

It has recently been announced that Moodagent will be pre-embedded on 15 to 45 million new Nokia phones during the next year.

PINShield is based on safety. For this reason, the codes are only stored on your smartphone and not ‘somewhere in the cloud'. The app works offline. This increases the usability as PINShield does not require Internet access and is usable anywhere, anytime.

For this release PINShield is developed for iPhone and Android. In the future, a version for Windows Phone will be released.

PINShield has an accessible guide that helps you to get started. The guide adjusts to wherever you are in the app. Thereby, you will get the needed help depending on which page you are at.

To get started, you type your pin code into colored squares in a pattern you can remember. PINShield stores the complete grid representation but has no knowledge of the placement of your numeric code. Your code is hidden in the grid and only you will be able to decipher it. This protects your code from theft both in the real and virtual world.

10 tips - How to avoid a mobile app success

Imagine this: You release a new mobile application, and a lot of happy and satisfied users start pouring in immediately. They want new updates and extra features, they are even willing to pay for it! They say it is a huge success. The demand grows and the phone keeps ringing. You are confused. All you wanted was to create an app that no one would ever discover…

But do not worry. Here are 10 tips to avoid more customers, so you can have your app all by yourself.

Hide your app

Name your app something unrecognisable which sounds like every other app. This ensures that when the users search for your app, a thousand of results will appear, and your app will be difficult to find among them. Another trick is to name your app something that is really hard to spell.
Only give access to few

Users tend to tell their friends and family about the apps they download. But if friends and family do not have the same phone as the user, they cannot download the app, i.e. the app is only released for iPhone and friends and family have BlackBerry, Nokia and HTC phones! By developing for as few mobile platforms and screen sizes as possible, only few users will have access to your app.
Lots of features

From the very beginning, your application should be filled up with as many features as possible. Thereby the user will have a hard time navigating it, will lose track and never realise the purpose of the app. This also enhances the complexity and the chance of errors.
Design is irrelevant

Do not use professional graphics designers. Nice graphics will just help increase the reliability and improve the user interface, which many users will enjoy. So if you wish to avoid that, you should only focus on functionality and not design.
Make it difficult to use

Violate as many design principles as possible for the chosen mobile platform. Why use built-in design elements when you can create your own?! If users cannot recognise the design, because it looks different than the rest of the phone, they will have difficulties understanding how the app works.
No Social Media!

Make sure that the users cannot ‘spread the word’ about your application via other medias such as Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and SMS. Allowing this may potentially result in an increase in user uptake due to the viral spreading.
Do not listen to what users are saying!

Do not follow up on users’ reviews and comments on various app stores. If you listen to what they say, you may end up with an improved product and satisfied customers.
Use lots of battery power

Make programming errors and drain the battery so the user’s phone easily runs out of power. Then the user will be annoyed by the app and will probably never use it again. And in the end the user will probably uninstall the app.
Generate bottlenecks

If you have an app, which delivers data from a server, then make sure that it does not ’scale’. At a certain point, the server will be overloaded because of all the users. This will slow down the performance, and users will probably get tired and bored of waiting.
Hush

Be secretive about your app and its services. Do not publish anything about your app on your website or elsewhere. If you have a mobile website, then you should not make a direct link to the various app stores so users can easily download your app.

If you follow these 10 tips carefully, there is a good chance you can prevent users from pouring in… On the other hand, if you wish to have more users, you should simply do the opposite of the advices above.

At Springfeed our experience is, that our customers do care about quality and getting as many users as possible, which is a great benefit for the end users. The 10 tips above are therefore meant as a humorous way of emphasising the importance of using resources in the right places to ensure an optimal user uptake.

Make your mobile site more visible and attract more users

If you are using a specific browser, say Safari, to visit a website like bbc.co.uk, you don't have to write safari.bbc.co.uk
in order for the website to be displayed in a Safari-optimised way, it usually just happens. So why should we have to guess the address when using a mobile browser?!

Is this even a problem?
If a website doesn't automatically detect a mobile device and deliver mobile content, the user will have to guess what the mobile address is, and there are quite a few options to be guessing from. Here are some using bbc.co.uk (which on a side note I think is doing a good job providing mobile content):

m.bbc.co.uk (works)
mobile.bbc.uk (works)
wap.bbc.co.uk (doesn't work)
iphone.bbc.co.uk (doesn't work)
bbc.co.uk/m (doesn't work)
bbc.co.uk/mobile (doesn't provide same content on phone as in regular browser)
bbc.mobi (doesn't provide same content on phone as in regular browser)

But this requires the user to be familiar with the above concept which I doubt many users are. So already there we lose some of the users. Next, the size of the mobile page and the regular page are significantly different. This has an undesired impact on data traffic expenses as well as download speed. Finally some mobile phones are not too happy about all content delivered. An example is Flash which iPhone doesn't support.

Our investigation
After some investigation where we looked at websites registered at www.fdim.dk, the Danish Internet Media Organisation, we could clearly see a trend. The web developers would either:

Not provide a mobile friendly website at all: 28%
Provide a mobile website via a dedicated address similar to m.bbc.co.uk only: 55%
Provide, or redirect the user directly to, a mobile website when visiting the regular address like bbc.co.uk: 17%

These numbers themselves do not reveal a problem. Perhaps it is not relevant with a mobile friendly version of a website, or the users may have grown accustomed to prefixing the address with an "m.". But digging into the gathered statistics reveals a difference. FDIM provides statistics on page views and visitors on both the regular webpages and some mobile friendly versions of the same webpages. Comparing these numbers with the information about whether or not a user would automatically get the mobile friendly webpage if using a mobile phone, we can derive following:

Websites which provide, or redirect the user directly to, a mobile website when visiting the regular address similar to bbc.co.uk gets 3.47% visitors and 5.15% page views from mobile devices in average.
Websites which do not automatically provide a mobile website will only get 1.51% visitors and 1.37% page views from mobile devices in average.

That is 2.3 times as many mobile visitors and 3.7 times as many mobile page views if we automatically redirect to or provide a mobile webpage!

Does this mean we should automatically redirect to a mobile friendly website if the user is using a mobile phone?
I strongly believe so. It is better usability and will make your users happy. However, we cannot be certain from these statistics that doing this will provide more users, only that more users will use the mobile webpages.
